Describe your venture: 

Challenge. Cars with fossil fuel internal combustion engine are the main contributor of climate change. Therefore one of the urgent matters to address the challenge is to have more Electric Vehicles (EVs) on the road with zero emissions. Almost all major car manufacturers now have started to make electric cars, hybrid or all electric, and public awareness in electric car is growing fast. But the cost of buying EVs is still discouraging. Infrastructure of the charging system comes painfully slow lagging behind the electric cars made available on the market. 

Vision. The Age of Electric Vehicle, EV Age, is upon us. Ownership of an electric vehicle now, however, is generally prohibitive. There is an interim measurement in the ownership of EVs: EV Conversion. Internal combustion cars can be converted to electric vehicles. Present conversion trend is in the hands of hobbyists. No serious conversion auto garage exists in the industry. There is a sufficient market that trained conversion mechanics can serve, hence the creation of EV Conversion Technologies is proposed.

EV Conversion Technologies. Bench mark technology for the EV conversion comes from Leo Motors, Inc. of South Korea (www.leomotors.com) with that EVCT will alliance for the venture. Leo Motors EV technologies have developed over 10 years and claim to have the most advanced technology in the industry in all components of EV locomotion. They are in the forefront of electric battery system as well with their zinc-air on-board charging device, eliminating limitation of running range problem associated with electric car battery. This battery on-board charging system will overcome the lack of infrastructure of charging service. A small but experienced auto repair service in Mississauga, called 5-10 Auto Repair, will partner with EVCT. The following EV Conversion Pilot Project will be carried out at the partner’s repair shop. A team of the conversion technicians from Leo Motors will join in the effort of the pilot project and beyond. There will be separate Marketing and Information Department to handle business expansion.

EV Conversion Pilot Project. To prove the viability of the 100% electric conversion technology in terms of cost/benefit, two electric car conversion works will be initiated within the budget of $50,000: One small car for AutoShare and a minivan delivery car for LITTER-LESS LUNCH, both of them operating out of Toronto. Conversion technicians from the Leo Motors EV company will carry out the conversion job with special conversion kids at the auto repair garage in Mississauga. The special conversion kits are claimed to give the EVs higher performance in per-charge range (250km), passing power (160k/h), hill-climbing power (power mode) and charging time. The EV battery is claimed to have best performance in the industry. The converted electric cars will be tested, licensed and insured for delivery. Report of evaluation for the two converted EVs will be made available. This pilot project will justify investment in view of expanded service in the near future.

Economic Scale of EV Conversion Business. There is a great interest among old car owners who want to convert their cars to EVs if it’s cheaper to do so. This is the best way to give a new life to old cars that have passed a soundness measure of remaining life of the old car. The conversion technologies employed for the venture will be able to handle an expected surge of the interest among old car owners. Besides private car owners, fleet operators like bus, taxi, rental cars, couriers, delivery services, governments and industries that have a large pool of cars are the good targets for conversion business to save their vehicle operating costs.

EV Technology Alliances. There are a number of alliances in this venture: ClimateSpark contest applicant, Leo Motors Inc, 5-10 Auto Repair and investor(s). EV Society of Canada may stand as an adviser. The venture may have an opportunity to import Leo’s eBikes. There is also eBox that can be marketed for renewable small green energy industry and any other power vehicles (trucks) and home use.

EV Conversion Club. A social website will be developed for electric vehicle owners and would-be owners to exchange experience and ideas. It is also information website for EV converters to help make EV ownership decision.

 


Emissions reduction potential: 

Each 100% electric car will have zero emission rate. Each EV car has a potential to eliminate 10 MT of pollutants per year.

How will you ensure your project is self supporting within five years?: 

The two converted cars will be delivered to AutoShare (Kevin McLaughlin) and Litter-Less Lunch (Seema Patbari) in Toronto to evaluate the EVs who has expressed the interest. If they are satisfied with their evaluation, they may purchase or lease their relevant EV. This will be the first revenue for the venture. Based on the result of evaluation, marketing EV conversion work will be promoted for EV conversion candidates from individuals and fleet operators. eBikes and eBox may be marketed through the venture establishment that will have additional revenue source for the investment. Within first two years the EV Conversion Technologies will start to make money at which time expansion of the business will be established in other cities in Canada.

EV conversion business will stay on as long as IC cars are running in the streets. The conversion may be an intermediate solution to EV ownership. It makes much sense for some to resort to conversion instead of buying new EV. It is a good way of giving a new life to old cars. Once people know about the benefit of the conversion in terms of environment and saving, there will be a big demand in the conversion business. Problem now is where to find licensed conversion auto mechanics. This is exactly what this venture is talking about.

I think this proposal has a good chance of getting public support with public fund to save energy and environment. It may create new auto industry of electric car technology. If Ontario embrace electric car technology like the one Leo Motors company ( www.leomotors.com ) has developed, Ontario may benefit economically by adopting Ontario auto manufacturers to new electric car technology.

Electric cars reduce emissions or eliminate emission. Great strength in electric cars is in the notion that the cars can be recharge using electic energy produced with renewable green energy. Those cars are true champion of green energy. Odds against this fact are investment is not geared to this evolution because oil industry is so powerful. Media side with the powerful.

How could this proposal be improved?: 

We are living in an age of information - digital information. That's where playing field lies. Electric cars have the most powerful ammunition in the shift in climate change debate. So Toronto Electric Car Owners Club set up an information portal in the Club's website that plays as an clearing house for electric car technology and everything else. Up to the minute technology and market information on electric cars would be in the portal - EV battery technology, EV electric motor engine, control and management system, market intelligent, statistics, research thesis, climate change readings, etc. This free information available to the public will play a powerful tool in ushering in the Electric Car Age.

Harry the oilnolore has a story to tell to the reviewers. He, a native Korean, was instrumental to bring first Hyundai car to Canada back in late 1970s and early 1980s before the car company from Korea preparing second attempt for the US market. He earnestly campaigned for the company to bring their car to Canada first.

Now he wants to bring electric cars from Korea to Ontario Canada in launching their electric cars for North American markets. The Korean electric car company is Leo Motors, Inc. They only have been doing their business in electric car technology for the last 10 years. Their technology in EV is most advanced. How could this proposal be improved?: 

If there is a company who want to try the Leo Motors electric car in Toronto, that would be a great story to tell to the reviewers. In fact there is one. AutoShare in Toronto want to evaluate this car, because oilnomore claims the EV car is best in the world. It has 200km range with the most advanced LiPoEon battery in the world, can pass other cars on highways and climb steep hills without difficulty. The Company is even in the brink of introducing a revolutionary electric battery that eliminates range limitation altogether associated with electric car battery. Electric cars can emit 0 pollutants. This is the greatest strength of electric car, but internal combustion engine vehicles dominate personal transportation, causing greatest damage to the environment. How to rectify the situation?, that is the biggest question.

How could this proposal be improved?: 

One of the functions of the Toronto Electric Vehicle Owners Club could be in doing advocacy of promoting EVs. It could encourage in creating EV dealership. From operational point of view, the two different engine modes of electric and gas are completely different like mixing water and oil. So specialized EV dealerships, just selling electric cars, would attract electric car buyers. Option and convenience is a key. The Club website has another portal advocating and promoting specialized EV car dealership.

I think I need to improve my presentation with pictures, videos, and reorganization of the presentation, and get help to do that.

I like the idea of getting cars off the road, I have mixed feelings about electric cars and the impact their batteries have on the environment once their life is complete

Simple promotion isn't enough, I don't think, how can you have direct impact on emission reduction and hold the claim?

How to get cars off the road has lot to do with urban planning. Suburban development depends on private cars for people getting around. Public transportation serving suburbs has limitation. Urban planning and transportation strategy hold a key for people to live daily life without depending on cars.

Used electric car batteries should be safely recycled, back into battery again. This recycling should be mandatory.

How could this proposal be improved?: 

Function of Toronto Electric Vehivle Owners Club (TEVOC) is more than promoting electric cars - proactive and catalytic. TEVOC could be the hub of electric car evolution. It serves interests of EV buyers, EV owners, EV garages, even EV makers and financiers. You can get access to up-to-date EV technology and market intelligence. TEVOC would even hold electric car racing event annually. I envision TEVOC in this role.

How could this proposal be improved?: 

I’m excited to see so many entrepreneurial proposals on ClimateSpark.  I especially like the model of social ventures that can sustain themselves by creating their own revenue and be less dependent on grants or gifts.  

In my own experience starting and building several companies, I’ve often employed “bootstrapping” techniques so I’m not dependent on external capital (VCs, etc.).  One technique I’ve used successfully is to recruit one or more “lead customers” who pay me up-front for a service (e.g., consulting or something they need right away), which gives me the capital to build my product or capability for them.  The big advantages:  cash up-front (or early); a real customer to help make sure my design is something they’ll want to buy; and a great partner to test ideas with as I’m getting off the ground. 

What’s your bootstrapping strategy?  Have you tried to develop “lead customers” for your product or service?  Have you talked to potential customers ? What are you doing to get cashflow from them  early, so your idea can gain traction?

Thank you, Deepak. You have touched on the most important point. I think I have a strong case, but it would do any good if it cannot have a source of revenue to support itself without depending on handout grants or donations.

How could this proposal be improved?: 

TEVOC (Toronto Electric Vehicle Owners Club) is a non-profit organization. First mandate when selected is to build an electric conversion car. As I talked to AutoShare, the completed EV car will be tested, licensed and insured, then delivered to AutoShare for evaluation. If the EV car performs as the conversion company claims, AutoShare will likely purchase or lease the car. This is the first revenue for TEVOC. TEVOC also hosts events and activities that generate some revenue, such as consulting services by volunteers, conferences, EV car racing, advertising in TEVOC website, membership fees, etc. TEVOC is a kind of social, cultural hub of EV evolution.

If TEVOC want to be a hub of EV evolution, It should stay as a non-profit organization, purely service oriented, free from making money for share holders. But can I rally supports from various sectors of EV industry, consumers and governments?

How could this proposal be improved?: 

I formulated many functions for TEVOC to perform. I may add one more, that is to hold "Toronto Annual EV Conference". It is an event where consumers, manufacturers, suppliers, EV owners, governments, academia, investors, researchers converge to also see what progress has been made during last one year. It could turned out to be an international EV event.

I got connected with EV Society of Canada. ECS has long history and is active in many areas in EV revolution.

How could this proposal be improved?: 

I think EV conversion is the way to go at the moment. I already have two cars to convert to EV for two possible Toronto clients. I am looking for best EV conversion kits. I think I found one. There is a great investment opportunity in auto conversion business.

I just joined Electric Vehicle Society of Canada. EVS has long history and been active all along. This is new to me. My original proposal has to be revised. I went to the EV Fest 2011 Oct. 23/2011 at Evergreen Brickworks. It was the eye opening event for me.

How could this proposal be improved?: 

So I got to focus more narrowly. Now I changed the title to "EV Conversion Technologies" from "Toronto Electric Vehicle Owners Club". I am now more comfortable with the change and got more confident in making the proposal into realization.

this is really cool - but is it safe?  I'm new at this, so i'm not aware of any established regulations or minimum requirements to pull this off.  Would the warranty on my car still intact?

You keep your licence plate and vin number intact after your conversion, you will have no problem driving your converted electric car under the same insurance policy (maybe with some change?). But your car warranty may not stay.

How could this proposal be improved?: 

I would suggest that you can pick an old car with good body and mechanically sound but engine is finished, of course, with no manufacturer’s warranty, you may find yourself made good deal by going for your money in the conversion. It may turn out to be a bargain, giving a new life to an old car, not to mention you will save tons of money in fuel and maintenance costs after all.

It would be great if you can find EV Conversion garage. But there is non as far as I know. It is a hobbyist job.

How could this proposal be improved?: 

EV cars first then EV garages. IC cars then IC car garages. This logic is not fair for Electric Garage, because there are enough EV cars on the road to be serviced by EV garage. But think of so many cars on the road that can be converted to electric car. So this is not chicken and egg situation. EV conve3rsion garages should be available right now. This is exactly what EV Conversion Technologies of this entry. Let's train professional licensed auto mechanics and build EV conversion garages. Then you know where to go to convert old cars or even new cars to electric or hybrid to 100% electric. EV converted cars will be tested, licensed and insured. This is the thing to come.

The proposal is quite impressive but still skeptical about its success. The idea is great but it's execution seems to be   a tough task and might not be possible in current scenario.

By ensuring proper funding of this proposal as funding seems to be the major bottlekneck for this proposal.
